The 32nd National Games Weekend, hosted by the Dwarf Sports Association UK (DSAuk), was an extraordinary success, uniting athletes, families, and supporters in a four-day celebration of sport, achievement, and community spirit. Held from Friday, 23rd May to Monday, 26th May, the event drew participants from across the country to the Midlands for a packed schedule of competition.
Friday: Powerlifting and First-Time Opportunities
The weekend launched on Friday with a buzz of excitement as attendees arrived and took part in taster sessions in Powerlifting, delivered by British Weightlifting. These sessions offered newcomers a safe and welcoming introduction to the sport, encouraging many to step out of their comfort zones.
The day ended on a high with the Powerlifting competition, where both first-time lifters and experienced athletes impressed spectators with their strength, technique, and determination.
Saturday: Opening Ceremony and Track & Field Brilliance
Saturday marked the official opening of the Games. The Mayor of Wolverhampton delivered an uplifting speech, followed by a moving reading of the Athletes’ Pledge by Gabby and Freya. The pledge reflected the values at the heart of DSAuk: inclusivity, courage, and community.
The day’s focus was on track and field events, where athletes of all ages showcased their talents. Special medals were awarded to first-time participants, reinforcing DSAuk’s commitment to welcoming and encouraging new members. The energy peaked with the ever-popular 4x100m relay, thrilling spectators with its display of speed and teamwork.
Sunday: Team Sports and more
Sunday kept the momentum going with a dynamic schedule of Basketball, Hockey, Cycling, New Age Kurling, and Shooting. Junior and senior athletes alike took to the courts, demonstrating teamwork, skill, and sportsmanship.
The range of activities ensured that everyone had a chance to participate, whether they were seasoned competitors or trying something new for the first time.
Monday: Swimming Gala and Football Tournament
The final day featured the eagerly anticipated Swimming Gala, where participants of all ages competed in a range of races. The poolside atmosphere was one of encouragement and joy, culminating in a medals ceremony.
In the afternoon, the focus shifted to the Football Tournament, played across two side-by-side pitches. Despite a few light showers, spirits remained high as Junior and Senior teams including Ladies, Men’s, Boys, and Girls squads played their hearts out. Each match was fast-paced and fiercely contested, providing an exciting conclusion to the weekend’s sporting programme.
A Heartfelt Closing
The event concluded with a second medals ceremony and a closing speech by Tim and Katie who both expressed deep gratitude to the athletes, families, volunteers, coaches who made the event possible.
