Remembering Andrew Smith

Everyone at DSAuk is deeply saddened and shocked to hear of the recent passing of Andrew Smith. It is especially difficult to believe that Andrew has gone, as he was still enjoying his love of cycling and sport.

Andrew was a remarkable athlete, both in his younger years and throughout his later life. He was a member of the GB team that first attended the World Dwarf Games in Chicago, alongside DSAuk President Arthur Dean OBE and his daughter Nichola, Graham Minnett and his daughter Kim and others . That pioneering teams experience helped inspire them and led to the formation of the DSAuk charity in 1993.

Andrew went on to achieve so much in sport. He played wheelchair basketball and won dozens of gold medals at the DSAuk National Games, demonstrating his determination, talent and competitive spirit time and time again.

The Smith family also played a hugely important role in the early development of DSAuk. Andrew’s father, Tony, and mum, Ros, worked tirelessly as volunteers, with the whole family contributing to the early success of the DSAuk National Games. Their commitment and generosity helped create opportunities that have benefited generations of athletes.

The DSAuk members, Board of Trustees and staff send our heartfelt sympathy to Andrew’s family and friends at this very sad time.

Andrew will be remembered with great affection and gratitude for his sporting achievements, his contribution to DSAuk and the many memories he created along the way.

Rest in peace, Andrew. You will be greatly missed and fondly remembered.
